The whole -- it's all private, it doesn't matter if I love her or not, we have plans but won't share -- doesn't go over well when you were the one who went on TV to find love.
He made himself look like a jerk and Nikki look clueless for being with a man who "really likes her a LOT." It's totally fine to not propose -- I feel like on the Bachelorette that is even a choice -- walk out in a relationship but without a proposal. But he could have handled the whole thing better. If this really is about her father (yeah right) -- he could have said "it's important for me to spend more time with her before proposing bc I promised her father I would," or make it about her getting to know his D off camera. Also it isn't exactly a state secret if you will/will not live together, or stay in your respective cities for a while and do a commuter relationship until there is a proposal. Catherine was right -- don't bite the hand that feeds you. Good luck to Nikki -- if she stays with him -- he seems like a control freak.
