I found the Smeltings reference to be genius. Had forgotten that touch.

By the way, I read JK Rowling's adult books and both are very good. "The Casual Vacancy" is stark but very well-written -- it is as if she wanted to write about the most unmagical things in the universe (obesity; teen bullying; cutting; drug abuse; crummy boyfriends) to show that she was not a one-trick pony. Job accomplished -- but I had to put it down for a while as, again, it was rather stark. She is one hell of an observer of human nature. I read the book after seeing that Margaret Atwood, I think, thought it was undervalued, and I had to agree. But it made me cry in public as I was finishing it over coffee.

Her mystery story, The Cuckoo's Calling, released under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, is a great read and more in the "entertainment" category.

OP here I just started reading the books again with DC#2 who is 7. I read them with DC#1 when DC#1 was at the same age. I honestly started this thread as when we looked at one of the HS's, my DC#2 thought the campus was actually Hogwarts. We've been to Universal so I don't know where he'd gotten his idea from but thought it would make for an interesting thread. Waiting for results and deciding where to apply has been very stressful.

This was a brilliant thread. I love how many adults (like me) read and enjoyed the books (or maybe the Jim Dale audio).

OP here DC scored in the low 90's on her placement test, Hogwarts may be in DC's future afterall. I was hoping for the high 90's so that DC would get a scholarship. Oh well. Nothing to do at this point except save.

Muggles and trolls are very different creatures! I'm not sure if trolls are covered in Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures class, but they're somewhere in the curriculum.

It's not like the people in our community go to their forums and put down the schools their student's attend. I'm sure that there are some great muggle schools but we would never consider them as they wouldn't meet the needs of our children.
