Sure. They did know he was in trouble. But they thought he was depressed i.e. not a danger to others.

Harris was a sociopath. That's a whole different ballgame.

Doesn't every killer have depression on some level?

The parents did know their kid was in trouble but did not know how bad it was or in exactly what way.

Most of the arsenal was stashed in the Harris house. Eric's parents took him to a psychiatrist and he was on medication. He fooled everyone - parents. school. diversion program, psychiatrist. He even fooled the police officers. They only found where some of the arsenal was hidden after they watched the basement tapes and he told them.

Dylan was a different case - he was depressed and suicidal and his parents missed the signs like many of us would do. The sad thing is that in his case intervention might helped him and that is something his parents will have to live with. That is why Sue klebold' book is so revealing. Hopefully it will help someone else pick up subtle signs that their child is in trouble.

Okay, but 17 years ago things were different. My parents never checked my room. I don't know anyone whose parents did. Eric Harris was one thing, but Klebold was supposedly suffering from depression. There was nothing to make them think he was going to harm anyone else. Most depressed people never harm anyone else. In this day and age of media, social media, etc. parents know the risks, check into things more, etc. but when this happened, mass school shootings weren't a "thing" yet.

I can very much imagine Keleod's parents being "good parents" for the most part but also being unaware of some of his activities. At that time, most parents with kids that age weren't "helicopter" parents. Once in high school, we roamed all around the neighborhood/community with our parents only having a vague idea of where we were. Many families had both parents working. The neighborhoods were generally thought safe, very suburban. It was the kind of community where it seemed difficult for kids to get into any real trouble. But now we know a little better.

I think his parents did have some denial about the severity of their son's mental problems.

The key is you have to know your kids.
Dylan's parents clearly didn't know him.

You've boiled it down to something that isn't always attainable. Especially with someone who has mental illness. They are exceedingly good at hiding things.

I -guarantee- you don't know everything about your kids. And the things you don't, you better hope are not big things.

For a year, these boys had been stowing away an arsenal of hundreds of weapons in their rooms (guns, ammo, knives, pipe bombs, grenades). And the parents didn't know about it. That is truly amazing to me.

How can you live in the same house with your kid and not know that?

This. Having a sister with bipolar and having myself suffered from deep depression and psychosis, briefly, I can attest that there are things that sick teens hide from their parents, but how, how, how did they miss the building armory?

Don't be fooled. The parents did know. Or they were the most stupid self-absorbed parents in the universe.

I remember watching the whole thing unfold on TV when it happened. My kids were toddlers and we lived in a tiny apt with 3 toddlers. I remember thinking how strange it was that she didn't know what her son was up to. Later I read that they lived in a 7000 sq ft house. Apparently you can get up to a lot in a 7000 sq ft house without the parents being aware.

I get the impression that he was doing his own thing and his parents were hearing stuff about his life every now and then, in passing. "Have a good day, Dylan!" "Mmmph". And they left it at that, didn't look too closely, no sense stirring up a hornet's nest you know...

His parents had their own lives to live.
