If you're so concerned about teaching your daughter to keep her skirt down, you also need to teach her how to dress when you are going to be active. Playing on monkey bars, running and falling in the schoolyard, sitting on the floor are all expected activities at preschool. All of those activities make it almost impossible to keep a skirt down. It sounds like you're just upset because the teacher used the word modesty.

Heck, I recently wore an above the knee skirt to a barbeque. I wasn't sure if there would be volley ball or something else active. So I put a pair of spandex shorts underneath so I could enjoy the best of both worlds.

I'm pretty laid back about these things and I think it's a normal request given the types of activities preschoolers engage in. I just bought my DD "playground pants" at Target and they are great. Like bike shorts.

Our liberal preschool in Potomac, MD recommends shorts under skirts. It seemed like a normal request to me.

She would get rashes, mulch, dirt, sand, god-knows-what in her vulva!!!

Doesn't your daughter sit on the ground? Doesn't she go down the slide? How do you protect the area with just that pretend underwear they have in 2T, 3T sizes?

Dear God - what a weird thing to write!

What is WRONG with you? You'd think the kids are grinding their privates into the dirt! WTF is your issue?

And yes, I agree with the school's rule. However, at three, I had my daughter in shorts, skorts, stretch pants and jeans - NOT a dress or skirt.

WTF is wrong with YOU? My daughter sits in the sand, on the ground, she pours mulch/sand in the bucket placed between her legs she carries it using her skirt/shirt/dress, she gets it between her fingers, under her nails, in her scalp. What's wrong with a child having fun and getting dirty?

Maybe your child is a blob and just sits there watching others and doesn't know how to play that's why you think getting dirty while playing is so "weird".

Lol, what hypersensitive women, I am pretty sure the pp was joking.

NP: I am pretty sure she was not and I am pretty sure she is very young (the WTF is wrong with YOU poster)

+1. And I am the polar opposite of someone who would dress my daughter this way for religious reasons. She's an active girl, and I want her to be able to hang upside down on the monkey bars all she wants without showing the entire playground her underpants.

DD has always worn shorts under dress/skirt to daycare. I don't want her sitting in the grass at the park with just her underwear as a barrier - itchy! And for outings to public places/restaurants, same concern. So much easier to just have bike shorts on. Plus, as dresses get shorter each year as she grows, she can continue to wear them comfortably with the shorts underneath. We also do the same with leggings when it gets colder out. I don't think it's odd at all.

Funny. We played on all the equipment when I was little and nobody worried about our undies showing....and I'm old enough that little girls had to wear dresses.

Just send them in blue jeans or pants. Dresses are a pain in the ass.

Normal, yes, we always wore shorts underneath so we could play on the playground, the slides, monkey bars, run around at recess, climb trees...when we got older we still wore shorts under the skirt so we could play kickball, etc.

This is required in our school, as well. Having shorts under a dress means that I don't have to police the way DD is sitting b/c for fear of showing her underwear. I don't want to tell my 3yo to "sit like a lady."
