Wow. My son just reported to me that his language teacher said that she wants to take her top students on a trip. I will not say what language or school.
I don't know where I come down on this since I know he would be extremely delighted to go and we could probably find the money. I am willing to bet, however, that some of his classmates are not in that position. Like some, I hope it's offered in the summer and not during the school year.

What you mean is too bad you can't make this a fully private school funded by tax dollars.
Instead you're stuck with a quasi-private program that does it's best to drive out low-income students AND uses tax dollars. Boo-hoo.

Is your understanding that only family of financial means should afford their child(rne) with the gift of an immersion education. Look, I support the trip and when the time comes, my family has the financial resources to send our child, plus one parent. But everyone does not have the finances, and I understand those parents concern. I personally think the gala auction money should be used from this year forth to help fund the China trip. If so, I think more parents would be more supportive of the auction.
BTW--YY was not our first or second choice. However, we have come to embrace the language and support our child's second language. We do not have a connection to China and yes we did get lucky in the lottery. But bitch, so did you.

it is the 2 weeks out of the school year while school is in session that bugs me the most about this trip. Summer, even spring break plus a week of school, would feel very different. The students who don't go, for whatever reason, finances or parent comfort level, will be sitting around without their classmates and teachers.

Maybe you should include the trip requirement as part of an enrollment contract? It would be a great way to further weed out all those families that don't have an extra 3000 dollars around for a 10 year olds field trip.

Chinese immersion school ~ school trip to China (is this surprising? You don't think it should be offered b/c it's "nasty" and hurts people's feelings) It's always been expensive to go, it's on the other side of the world, and has been planned before the school was founded.
