i too have often wondered why some people are hell bent on backing into a spot when they take forever to do it, and do a poor job of it. for some reason, it seemed like it was always black drivers doing this and i wondered why.
but after reading some people's explanations, i feel enlightened, actually. maybe i won't judge others as much anymore.

I also find it terribly sad that OP and others around here have such control issues over something as mundane as backing into parking spaces. It's no wonder there is so much parking lot rage especially in my area, AU Park, where people feel entitled to dictate on something so trivial. Seriously, just sit down, have a cocktail and stfu, already.

I'm driving my suburban to the beach and taking a total of 8 people with me. Ordinarily they would probably go in 3 different cars.

But really, how can you presume to question why a family needs a big car? We are very scaled down in our carbon footprint in many other ways that you will never know--what a judgemental jerk you are.

I'm the child of diplomats and was given many hours of emergency tactical driving and defensive driving. We were taught by my instructor to back in for safety and ease of quick getaway.
Think about it; when you drive by to see a space, you can also see that it is clear. When you leave, you are pulling forward so obviously it is clear.
Backing out injures a lot of people at homes and parking lots as there's no way to ensure there's no one/kids/etc behind you or under the wheels.
Having said that, over the years I've gotten lazy and admit I don't always do it. People here drive larger cars and I agree that the ones I see using this method aren't very good, safe or fast at it.

I think everyone is aware that passing cars have the right of way. But I think there's a point at which the passing car should stop because the backing-out car is almost done pulling out. If I'm the passing car, I'll always stop if the backing-out car has already started backing out as I approach. it's just common sense and common courtesy.

Yes, I am aware of that. Nonetheless, when someone is halfway out of a spot, slowly, carefully inching back, could some people chill the F out and not insist on screaming through the lane just because they have the "right"? There's also driving sensibly and with courtesy, which is not always doing something just because you have the right to.

Yes, it is rude to take up 2 parking spots especially when crowded. We can all agree to that. But who really cares if a car - properly between the lines - is front facing or back facing. Seriously...it almost fascinates me that some people are so bothered by this stuff...(almost b/c I actually think it is quite sad to be so upset about what is in effect a personal preference).
