I want chickens (a few hens) very much but it isn't legal in my town. The city council hearing on backyard poultry was full of the same kind of foolishness displayed here "we used to be rural and poor, but now we are well off and suburban, and chickens would make us LOOK poor." And one councilwoman saying "yuck. I don't want to know where my food comes from." At the same time the town is trying to promote itself as a hip, artsy, no-car-needed town close to DC. If you can't keep up with the trends (ie urban homesteading) you aren't going to attract the young and hip. Who, by the way, have chickens.

Then I don't want young and hip in my neighborhood. Jeez.

Seriously, I mean, we're not a developing nation, you know? I don't understand why "hip" people think it's ok to fetishize poverty. Talk about offensive.

Yeah, weird. I have never had the desire to turn a small backyard (yes, 1 acre is small and <0.5 acre is a postage stamp) into a livestock farm. There is a reason no one wants livestock in close quarters. Disease, vermin, smell, noise. Need I say more?

OP again. Another ignorant poster. No need to defend the size of my yard for a couple chickens NOT a farm. If you read one iota about it, that much space is not even needed. How much space do you think free range chickens get? All of the above are from poorly managed coops and you are poorly educated if you think they can some how give you a disease. Google is your friend

OP here. You don't get out much, do you? In case you haven't read the last 6 pages or so of this thread (and I can't blame you if you didn't) I'm by no means a youngster, hip, or poor and it's funny to hear your descriptors for whatever you have made up in your head chicken owners to be. It sounds like your reference to a developing nation really shows me that YOU are in fact on the defensive. I hear you saying you do not approve of a well off person taking care of animals ONLY poor people do that and if they can't stay in their confined "labels" that bothers you? That's how I'm reading into that one.

And I'm not talking about "we" here I'm talking about "me" so do what you like in your backyard, ok then?

And for the chicken owners I know in Bethesda, I think they are far from "fetishizing poverty". Get a clue. I suppose it's ok to go to the store to buy and eat eggs or chicken as long as you don't have to see them. That would just be horrific. Maybe just the worst thing to happen around Montgomery County.

I get out plenty. I've seen countries where chickens are kept by impoverished people. I'm guessing you haven't had that privilege, or you wouldn't think this was so cool.

The "hip" comment was directly responsive to the pp. I know full well you're not hip.

You are quite possibly the most narrow minded poster I've encountered. Wow.

OP here. Glad to think I am not the only one!

To add, what would you do if you hens got sick?

Would you give them antibiotics?

People willing to raise 'organic' animals may not be willing to give proper care to the animals, which makes the situation much worse.

OP here. I completely understand. Too bad you can't have them there Are you talking about Rockville? I read somewhere they have banned chickens or maybe it was any livestock or poultry, I don't remember. Check your nearby towns they are all completely different. That was one reason was moved from down county. Your example is just more people displaying pure ignorance and lack of information.

13:44 thank you for the link.

OP here, I assumed you were the person who asked the same exact question before. It's loaded in the way that you want to know "what I will do" with them. If I say I eat them, some will say that's cruel or how disgusting. If I say I give them to a Montgomery County free range farm afterward, some might say what a waste. If I say I process them myself, there's another debate..and if I say I take them to be processed and pay for the chicken to be cut and packed I'll hear all about how much cheaper it is at Safeway (as if that's why I'll keep a couple chickens). I hope that clears it up for you.

And to answer your question, I have not decided yet but have researched my options.

Thank you, but definitely not an expert in any of those above.I'm not looking to sell or promo anything if you have noticed. I was honest in my first post. It's easy to read up on anything you're interested in and go from there. I would point out that moms out there looking for that "perfect stroller" could sound like experts describing features they have, comparing, where to find them ect..but that is very flattering. Research is just a smart thing to do in any topic of discussion.
