Thank you for the technique of alternating which side you do first weekly. Makes perfect sense. Regarding the 10 developer I thought using the 10 developing would cause a color build up even if you only do the roots, because it is impossible not to go further than just the roots.

My hair is pretty white (prematurely). If I dye it blond I can go for a very long time between colorings, but if I'm dying it darker, which I am now - every 3 to 4 weeks max.

I'm 47. I started going gray at 25. Honestly, I NEED to color once a month. I can see gray coming back in after ONE WEEK.
But right now I'm at 10 weeks post-coloring and it looks horrible, but such is life. I can't afford to go every month. I can't really afford to go every two months. I just can't. I would try to color in-between but have never found a good product. Plus, I think my stylist would kill me.

Most of my gray is right around my face. It sucks.

Here's an example of great gray hair. My grandmother had hair like that and even as a kid I thought it looked great.
I am in my late 40s. I still have mostly dark brown hair, and only about 15% gray. It's not a good look. I color every 6 weeks. As soon as I become mostly gray, I plan to stop coloring.

Thanks to the poster who gave the in depth description of her method. One trick my hairstylist taught me was to smear a line of Vaseline all along my hairline prior to coloring. This keeps the color drips from dyeing your skin. My hairstylist also advised me to use a brush to paint on the color(works so much better than the squeeze bottle). I currently use Clairol Loving Care product, but one package can last me multiple touch ups.

Every time I dye at home I make an insane mess -- black dye is hard to deal with -- but I just can't pay $90 every 4 weeks in a salon.

I dye at home, because I could not fork over that money so often and do not have the time to make appointments that often. I put down black towels but I admit my bathroom has a few brown spot.

Another alternative is to get it died professionally every 6 to 8 weeks and do touch ups at home ( hit the roots only)

I've always been mistaken for being significantly younger than I am, so the few grays that have come in have actually given me a creditability boost that I appreciate. I don't have any plans to color my hair regularly for at least another 10 years.

Every 6 weeks.

I color at home every 2 weeks. I grayed young and have dark hair that grows fast. It sucks. I alternate with root touch up and regular color.

I sure hope your DH is keeping up with his colorings. Or is he 15 years younger than you? Dude sounds like a total prick.

You came to that conclusion based on what? Her husband cares what she looks like and wants her to look nice, there is nothing wrong with that. PP admitted that she lets the coloring go for many weeks. I am sure she is looking frumpy and not very well groomed. She is not that old that she should not care about how she looks.

You sound like a very angry person and a total potty-mouth DCUM poster.

This would be ok: My husband prefers when I don't let my roots get too noticeable, but I hate spending the money.
This is not ok: My husband gets pissed at me when I let my roots get too noticeable

Do you see the difference? I am not pp, nor am I angry, but I would not have a DH who actually gets angry if I don't meet his beauty regimen. I would also worry, as PP alluded to, that it's a sign he will not accept my growing older gracefully.

I saw the use of word "pissed" as a figure of speech which the poster used. I am assuming he does not thrash her within an inch of her life if she does not color her hair. Considering that she lets it go for several weeks more after the first 4-5 weeks, I am sure she is looking very unkempt and her roots are showing. In fact, it is better if someone does not color at all because then you are uniformly gray. When you color and let it go - the roots look ugly.

The pp who responded wrote three sentences. All of those were angry and lashed out at the husband. That is a good indication that the person who wrote it is angry and belligerent. This is not a relationship forum. This is a beauty forum.

I'd go gray if it looked good. But it doesn't. Gray looks awful in curly hair. I'm all for aging gracefully, to some it may mean going gray. But I'd rather don't look like a witch. Same goes for teeth whitening. Or wearing makeup. If it makes me happy who's to say that it's not graceful?

I color my hair a dark color, so I need to color every 3-4 weeks. I color at home and it takes me around 45 minutes. Usually I do it at night and throw in a few other beauty treatments to use the time effectively.

I have no problems with people not coloring their hair. It is their choice. I feel that I look older and tired when I am not well groomed and I really do not feel happy and confident about the way I look then. I am 50. I look good for my age.

Actually, I do not mind if others of my age do not look their best and don't color their hair. Really. I would encourage more and more women to go completely gray. As for me...well, I am cursed with being shallow and vain. So, I suffer.
