There were a small number of Center-eligible students at the school (eight 3rd graders and one 4th grader). At that time (2009) this small cohort mostly decided to stay at the base school. Unfortunately there is no more recent data showing how many Center-eligible students there are at Silverbrook and what they opted to do.

If you look at the profile for Lorton Station ES on the FCPS website, it shows the 2011-2012 membership numbers of roughly 185 students in the AAP Level IV Center (all grades). Therefore it appears there are roughly 2 AAP Center classes per grade.

You will need to make the decision about what peer group would be best for your child -- the small cohort at Silverbrook or the larger peer group at Lorton Station.

One thing to remember is you can switch from one school to another the following year. So you could stay at the base school for this coming school year and switch to the Center in 2013-2014. You know your child best and how that might work. I know for my kids, the peer group at the Center made a big difference. But I have no first-hand knowledge of Silverbrook or Lorton Station, and Local Level IV really differs from school to school.

Good grief there is a lot of really helpful information in your post. I think you've pretty much singlehandedly fixed the snark/utility ratio for the entire board the rest of the month. Well done!

So there will be a single class of students. This can be a good thing or this can be a bad thing. At least at a Center you have more chances to group kids based on level and can also break up cliques.

Silverbrook has many level IV rising 3rd graders this year. Unless a lot chose the center (which historically doesn't happen). The class will be almost full if not completely full of level IV students. It could be after appeals there might need to be 2 classes and that would change the amount of center eligible children per class possible. Good Luck with your decision!

Thank you all for help and guidance. The appeal process worked. Received eligibility letter today. SilverBrook Elem is base school and Lorton Station is GT center. The placement form is asking to select either Base school or Center school for Level IV program. I thought base school only offers Level III program. Is it ok to select SilverBrook for Level IV though it is not the GT center for local schools? How does it work? What would be the difference between level IV at SilverBrook (Base school) and level IV at Lorton Station (GT center)? I have to submit the placement form by July 9th.
