Funny how people think a family of four grossing 44K needs incentive. They have incentive. They can't buy the things they need. They don't kick back because they are afraid of the marginal tax rate on a potential raise.

I think if we can just incentivize those poor folks, maybe we can get them to take a fifth job! It's amazing to me that otherwise hard-headed "realist" conservatives can't seem to get it through their thick heads that there are a lot of hard-working good people out there who just can't make it in the harsh, Hobbsian society we've constructed.

Furthermore, there are a lot of incredibly dumb, incompetent, and just plain dysfunctional people out there as well. They've got kids. Saying, "Don't have kids" won't cut it. The choice is between letting people sink on their own, and consigning their children and their children's children to the same kind of mulish, squalid existence, or picking up their bills and giving them some breathing room.

The latter is what you do in a Christian society. I'll leave characterizing the former as an exercise to the reader.

You seem to think the two are mutually exclusive. I beat you with a bat, thereby giving you an incentive to protect yourself better. Win-win!

You also seem to think that all that's needed is more incentive. Instead of taxing them more, why don't we threaten lower earners with imprisonment or violence?

If all that's needed is more incentive, explain to me why only about 6% of applicants to McDonalds get hired.

The ignorance about tax policy is breathtaking -- and a direct result of the machinations that enable Mitt and Mrs. Mitt to earn $57K per day and pay less than 15% in taxes.

Anyone who thinks taxation at EITHER end of the scale has any relationship to a person's work habits is simply wrong. Taxing the poor does not incent them to "work harder" and taxing the rich does not cause them to stop "creating jobs."

But EVERY taxpayer has to answer the question. Single/Married Filing Jointly/Married Filing Separately/Head of Household/Qualified Widow or Widower. It's the FIRST THING you do after filling out your name and address! Do people have annual amnesia???

I guess some people continue to believe that economic mobility is just a matter of incentive, instead of a result of a bunch of confluent events.
Hold tight to that American dream myth if it keeps you warm at night, but it is not a reality for many people.

You can file as "Married filing separately". That appears to be the case with the Kerry's.
