My son's name is Bishop - I was watching a B-rated horror movie when I was pregnant and Bishop was the name of the antagonist. I loved it the second I heard it. It didn't have religious connotations at all to me or any of our friends. A lot of people thought of the chess piece and it was also a job in a MMO we played at the time. I often joke he either needs to be a rock star or a freelance exorcist (think Constantine or the Winchesters) otherwise he's misusing his name. He's in first grade right now and has never been bullied for it - in fact a LOT of people, old and young, love his name.

As weird a name as it is, it's actually not bad.

Wouldn't "The Bishop" be better than just "Bishop"?

Sure it can. Alistair and Hugh are examples of names that are classic and uncommon.

Bishop is, however, not a classic name.
