My DS scored a 124 in NNAT in 1st Grade. Does he automatically qualify for the pull-out program at school or is there a referral process for that? Should I approach the AART teacher? What are his chances to get into the Level IV program if he scores more than 130- 132 in COGAT next year?

We recd our daughter's NNAT scores yesterday, I have to say I was very dissapointed, he scored 119 and in the 88%.
He is 1 grade level higher in math and reading (confirmed by both KG and First grade teacher) and has been recommended for advanced math and reading clubs in his school.
He is very creative and extremely smart, not sure if he could make the pool next year with these scores:

Anyway, BOTH of my kids scored lower than that on the NNAT (they were 2nd graders when they took it) and BOTH are in the Center now & doing extremely well. One was in the pool based on CogAT scores and one was a parent referral. A 119/88% on the NNAT is not great, but is not dismal either. The GBRS is extremely important if your child has test scores across the board in that range, though. So it depends a lot on what the CogAT scores are next year - if those are in a similar range (ie, high 80s/low 90s percentiles), you are going to need a GBRS higher than 12, I would think. And if the CogAT is much higher, you should have a good chance.

no. read the fcps website please

i think the purpose of the pool is to evaluate the students who are the most likely to need academic challenge based on their high test scores. those students outside the pool are less likely to need academic advancement. That's why 60-70% of pool kids are accepted and less than 40% of referrals are accepted.

Practically, it means nothing, except the test scores are higher. The purpose of the pool was to provide a means such that students that might be otherwise missed are evaluated. Basically, kids that do not have anyone advocating for them (disadvantaged, etc).

Historically, it means your child is 67% likely to get into AAP.

132: The benchmark school is 132 this year. And being in the pool means very little.

If its 132 or higher, your probablt good. That was benchmark this year.

The percentile rank is derived from a national sample. To many of us, that isn't very helpful. I would much prefer knowing how my daughter compared to her peers at Haycock, or even her peers across the entire Fairfax school district.
