I find it funny how the rhetoric changes depending on the school. If a certain school in Atlanta went to the waitlist this early it would be confirmation that its no one's first choice. But since its WashU and Rice its something else. This is on top of WashU very high ED acceptance rate.

And why going back to demonstrated interest might help them.

My kids friend just got moved off the waitlist at Pitt.

The way this works is that a regional admissions officer generally looks at who they admitted from their region and usually is able to create a yield percentage. They follow closely who is turning them down in their region (throughout April); when there are a lot of rejections for kids that they thought they would yield they know their calculations are off, and they have to move early.

Early movers can to do better than those who wait until after May 5. Kids want to wrap this up before May 1 and get a roommate and start moving on.

HYPSM all generally do well after May 1. But others are mixed.

Northwestern did horribly after May 1 last year and went very deep into the waitlist.
