There is a city in Pennsylvania where people stopped their cars to let you in, someone even rolled down their window so i could see they were letting me cut in. Residents looked at me in the eye, noticed me, genuinely very respectful of my space. Not just here and there, but everywhere. It was the strangest friendliest city i have ever visited , so opposite of the DMV. This place seems to be on the upswing so i will not name it for VCs to swoop in and ruin it.

You' ll find nice/decent people everywhere if you're a decent person + treat people respectfully. (Saying that as a white person).,For people of color, racism is unfortunately still alive + well, so I would be interested in hearing their perspective.

I lived in the research triangle area, and it was definitely fake. There are a lot of racists. I was shocked at things people would say once I got to know them better and they just assumed I was one of them. I also was surprised at some of the things my best friend at work there encountered (a highly accomplished black woman). Also, during the diversity training seminar it was eye opening how many people grew up in a bubble where they didn't encounter diversity. One man didn't learn that "Jew" wasn't a very until college.

I don't think you can say a state has the nicest people. I have met many nice people all over. It might even be a stretch to characterize a city/town as has having the nicest people.


I was in a shop in the Pinehurst area when I heard two women talking very racist stuff. I was so disappointed but it is the South. Lots of confederate flags.

Indiana. My mom and grandparents were from there and I spent summers there. Nicest people ever!


We moved a lot while I was growing up. I have another half dozen places to compare Indiana to in terms of living there--not just visiting-- and Hoosiers are my least favorite people. White Hoosiers are the most racist people I've ever encountered. (I'm white.)They are incredibly insular; anyone who isn't from Indiana, Kentucky, or parts of Ohio is suspect. It's also the least intellectual place I've ever lived.

Goes to show you--different strokes for different folks.

This is the south too. Also judgment about church / not church / which church. So very hypocritical and truly unkind and not "nice"

I spent some time in Chapel Hill and it's very different from the surrounding area. It's a small town dominated by a large university. Lots of professors who have moved there from elsewhere...quite diverse.
