She is planning to just put Public Health as her primary major and IR as a secondary academic interest. Duke ED is also a strong contender for her. They're definitely different in terms of social scene, but they offer the best Public Health curricula.

Advise JHU ED1, as ED2 will be harder and, rankings aside, Duke is in a different world admissions wise.

PP- My kid applied to hopkins RD but got into a different school ED - so withdrew the hopkins app. We just wanted all the apps done and submitted by Dec. Sorry for lack of clarity!

DC's considering getting recruited for track. We went to look at JHU campus, including their athletic facilities, and said facilities are in bad shape. It's a D3 school, yes, but still.. Hopkins shares their track stadium with Loyola Maryland, it's located outside of main campus, a 15-minute drive through a questionable area away, and the stadium itself is pretty sad-looking. Our MCPS high school track looks like Paris Olympic stadium in comparison.

FWIW, their soccer and lax stadiums are on main campus, so I guess it speaks to the school's priorities, in sports and otherwise

Just my 2 cents.

Not in applications they are not, and we are talking about admissions. IR is an easier admit.


how do you know for sure? hopkins had 25k women and 20k men apply 2 years ago:

Apply RD before ED comes out (not the best idea because of app fees) or they were admitted ED2.


Ed2 is plausible but i would wait till after ed decision for any regular decision apps

I agree that there is little talk about hopkins and i dont get it. My kid wanted a medium size school in/near a city with a strong IR and econ/business. So I put hopkins on the list to explore. Lovely campus and great professors. Had a decent tour guide who was chatty. My kid had little interest bc of reputation of being nerdy and asocial. My smart kid wants to study and have fun. I researched further and found greek is popular for athletes and humanities/social science kids. The campus feels more secure than when I went there. I was a TA and student advisor for one of their more "cut throat" programs and it didn't feel cut throat to me (compared to my HYPSM experience). The research opportunities are top notch, music, business and medicine are too.

Davidson is 2+ hours away from the Triangle so that is aggressive. Wake is a lot closer so I would give you that.

As the crow flies, Princeton and Rutgers are as contiguous to Philly or NYC as the MD area schools are. So attach them to Columbia, Barnard, NYU and Cooper Union or to Penn and the mainline SLACs and it is competitive. Because I would argue that Rutgers=UMD but I'm guessing the DMV crowd will incorrectly fight me on that.
