Fern leaving a havoc. But only through Montgomery County.
Not only through MoCo. Even snowy counties are struggling. Do you really no no one who lives elsewhere in the state of Maryland?
People in other places had virtual. Did YOU know that?
MCPS has its problems, but at least we're not that bad.
Why did virtual have to be all or nothing?

They all probably paid top dollar to private contractors. The county, and more specifically the school system, cannot really do that without budget meetings and votes. I mean it's not the most effective way of doing things but it's how local government pretty much everywhere is set up to operate. I have heard all the rumors that private companies have reached out to MCPS to offer help and that MCPS has ignored them but I bet that probably has to do with the fact these local companies are probably charging 500% of what they normally would.
Our small elementary school already has a small utility tractor with a snow plow. While not very practical for the parking lots, it made quick work of the sidewalks. I don't know how common that is. Even if it's unusual, they only needed to use it for a couple of hours, and those are relatively easy to transport between sites.
School sidewalks seemed to be done pretty quickly in my trip around the Germantown/Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village area. Even schools that had untouched parking lots and bus loops had cleared sidewalks
That combo is still useless.

No it should be a full closure.
I love how you're trolling the other PP.
Personally, I'm sure MCPS is doing the best they can, and I refuse to raise my blood pressure for such petty details are which day kids are going to return to school... even though I'd rather it be sooner than later.
Sorry to ruin your fun, but not trolling. After having seen many schools in the area, the condition of the community sidewalks, snow banks, right lanes with snowbanks so basically one lane in each direction, people walking on that same lane because the right lane is housing the freezing rain banks, students who can not afford snow gear (no not everyone passes around their old snow gear), bus stops not cleared, people in DC area not knowing how to drive, bus drivers unwilling to take a risk with Mr lawyer's kids, temps not rising to melt, and a few other things, the district is not ready as of Thurs eve and it will be a miracle if they get the resources (workers, equipment) to get it ready by Monday delayed opening or a Tuesday delayed opening. Out of an abundance of caution, Wednesday. Btw, DC public schools opened today a few schools didn't have heat and the students and parents who walk to school were in ma y parts climbing snow banks and walking on unshoveled sidewalks.

Yep. With a delay Wed. Most of this isn't going to melt until maybe Thursday.
This county is ridiculous. You can walk on snow. Lots of people are doing it.
+1 In my country we used to sled to school when there was ice. MoCo is ridiculous.

Wrong - sidewalks in the shopping center near my home have a nice block of ice but the parking lot is clear though. I had a medical appointment and I had to walk on the snow/ice since there was no sidewalk. I was anxious since I already have a bad hip and holding onto the parking meter till and was relieved when I got to the walk path beyond the sidewalk.
It made me sad when I thought about people less fortunate than I am who rely on public transportation like buses. Near the Ride on bus stop someone cleared a narrow path on the mound of snow, and the sidewalk just on either side of the stop was clear.
The way the county treats low income housing residents is disgusting. Their apartment walkways have t been shoveled yet they can't get the residents help to have management do their damn job of clearing the walking areas
I'm genuinely curious - in apartments, are the residents supposed to clear anything besides their cars? The nurse at the doc office said she couldn't come to work the past few days because the steps and walk path to her car was not cleared.

Jokes aside, situation around school here is bad. No sidewalks cleaned, no parking lot. Super hard for cars to pass on a two lane road. Don't see how this is going to get done. Pressure is on MCPS but if they open and we have ton of kids with broken limbs on Monday, it will be a bigger scandal.
+100, cue the Bethesda crowd on the news upset because their snowflake was forced to go to school on time. It's now MCPS fault and they want the BOE involved.

Kids will be fine, it is their nasty parents who will sue at the drop of a hat that MCPS is afraid of. If they sled and hurt themselves its on them but if they hurt themselves trying to get to school, the same Karens who want school to open will be calling the media.
