It’s going to be ok, Reina, OP’s kid probably isn’t thinking a BA in History will be his terminal degree.

And if not, better a $50k history job than a $0 AI displaced tech job.

history is very mid-table. not great, not bad. you forget these stats are MOSTLY from kids graduating from local and regional colleges, since that 's where most people graduate from college. your history degree from yale won't have this same outcome

$77k mid-career? Thanks, but no thanks.

Major doesn’t matter if you go to a T20 school.

The same can be said for many STEM majors. Grad school. Why is it hard to see the connection…why would a math or bio major be more of a connection to CEO? 🙄 To be CEO, you need good leadership skills in what ever field you’re in, public speaking, critical thinking, broad network and knowledge base…probably a grad degree. Doesn’t matter if you’re a history, poli sci, bio, CS major.

You need to write well. Most humanities majors write better than STEM.

Wrong.

No, they’re obviously correct that the university matters. With a major based on hard skills—engineering or nursing or whatever—it matters much less. An essential part of a history major’s education at Princeton or Bowdoin or wherever is the soft skill of being collegial with members of the ruling class
—an experience less readily available at Oregon State (to choose at random a very fine school that is not terribly chic). And I haven’t even mentioned the reality of connections, credentials, etc.

This has got to be satire. If not... wow. I'm embarrassed for you. My DC majored in history at a state school and is well-employed. Oh, and he also uses his "soft skills" every day. Don't you fret.

FWIW, I know this isn't a high prestige career, but at our private HS, the starting salary is 90k and goes up to 175k after 10 years with full benefits and summers off. It sort of tops out around there, but take on a secondary capacity (ie volleyball coach for a season) and add 10k.

We're well off so can afford helping our kids with down payments and college for their kids, which will make life a whole lot easier. But even without that cushion, it's not a bad outcome.

There aren’t enough eye rolls in the world

DP. Not enough eye rolls for what? OP’s candid and helpful response?

You must be controlling and overbearing. I would not try to exercise control over my children using purse strings.
