Around 30% of inmates in the USA are mentally ill; some went in that way and others become that way from living the conditions of the incarcerated.

Former prosecutor and former defender here who has seen the system from the inside out. I do believe that if human society survives climate change we will one day look back at this era as terribly misguided at best and more so depraved in terms of our treatment of the mentally ill/mentally disordered among us.

We should definitely release that 30% to the streets so that they can live their best lives. The mentally ill belong on the streets, not in prison.

I think we are about 100 years out from having a much much better understanding of mental illness and neurodivergence. So like 1850 with germ theory and understand the role of viruses, bacteria, antibiotics etc.

He died by suicide in NH.

I haven't read the updates since this first happened, but a news report I caught just part of last night said the suspect was someone who was a grad student under him and the other victim a long time ago.

I know someone who was a PhD candidate in math 20 years ago, left the program over a professor he still holds a grudge against him. He wouldn't kill him (for one thing, this guy developed a very serious chronic medical condition a couple of years after he quit grad school and wouldn't be able to carry anything out even if he did have a notion to).
