I'd much prefer he did wear a coat! But I spent time forcing him through tears and upset when he was 4 and 5 and 6. Once he hit 2nd grade I told him the choice is his. I'll make sure he HAS a coat that fits and that he "likes" but the actual wearing it? That's up to him.

I think this is the weirdest argument to get heated over. My kid hates coats, hates pants, hates long sleeves. Last year he wore shorts and short sleeves all year except for the really cold week, when I made him put on pants. For safety, he always has a coat in his backpack. But he's fine at the bus stop, and during recess (and this year, his teacher doesn't like the cold, so they only go out for 10 minutes).

When I lived in Minneapolis, there were two grad students who wore shorts year round. They didn't die, or get frostbite. I just think this is a total non-issue.

If my kid can't figure out how he is most comfortable, then I have bigger problems. If he makes a mistake and is really cold one day, it will be up to him to learn from it. He won't learn anything from me forcing him to wear clothes he's uncomfortable in. (And his school is so hot I can barely volunteer, so he's not crazy).

Same. My kids don't wait for a bus either. They go from a warm car to warm school and are outside for a few minutes. It generally warms up by recess and they are running around. It's why the lost and found is overflowing with coats because even the most perfect kids take them off and leave them outside when they get hot from running around.
