Cocaine can be a performance enhancer over limited periods of time. Common on the Street and the City in 80s and 90s.

Really smart people can perform at a very high level despite also partying very hard.

I have never mentioned this to anyone in real life but my son took the ACT while completely hung over, on 4 hours of sleep, and scored a 36. I was so angry with him the morning of that test. He's now a STEM major at a top10 school and continues to be "very social", goes out all the time and so far (18 months in) has a 3.95.

they are not unless they are from a small subset of feeder schools where unhooked kids outside the top 20% can get in to Cornell/Brown, or they are recruited ivy athletes.

Also never tried cocaine, marijuana, or anything else nor did my elite college friend group. Saw quite a few cocaine deaths in residency and there has been a large increase in marijuana addiction admissions at our hospital the past year or two (hyperemesis). The pendulum will swing away from marijuana soon enough and sadly it will become another problem that mostly affects poor people.

My kid (at an Ivy) texted me during orientation to say "who knew cigarettes were still a thing" She was surprised because kids in HS vaped (a lot) but no one her age really using cigarettes back home. She hasn't mentioned cocaine at all, but I remember it being a rich kid thing when I was in college so I'm sure its still a thing in certain social circles.

Same reaction about cigarettes from my DD when we toured colleges recently and she did some overnights. She's been around vaping since middle school, but was really surprised to see cigarettes in the mix. She said (to me), "haven't we established that those are bad for you?!" ; ). I'm sure she'll be desensitized soon, sadly.

My sophomore DD at Middlebury hasn’t heard about or seen anything besides pot and alcohol and she goes to the parties at the social houses. My similar college in the 90s had all the drugs so it’s nice to hear about it being less prevalent.

They spent high school getting drunk. They're bored and move on.
