You are naive. Our neighbor worked in the cafeteria then and said there was so much waste that year. They used to try to get the employees to bring it home to avoid throwing it out. She told us how she didn’t blame the kids for not wanting to eat some of those meals that were basically not edible.

This is emblematic of what society has become. A three tiered system.

The accumulating class - a small group of people who have sufficient wealth to just sit around and watch their wealth continue to grow, sure they pay taxes but not enough to keep everything going.

The supporting class - an ever shrinking middle class who mostly stay above water and whose taxes keep everything going.

The mooch class - those who rely on the tax dollars of the other two classes to do nothing but still have a better standard of living than most of the people around the world. An ever growing segment of the population not at all interested in a hand up but want a perpetual hand out.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Somebody, in this case the supporting class, primarily, is buying that free lunch.

You must all have little kids because otherwise, why didn't you complain about this during the Covid and post-Covid years? My kids got free lunch for over a year. It was great!

Just like you let daddy state educate them?
It's so foolish to think that lunch is the one think that should be excluded in free schooling.

School is not free.

Exactly. So lunch should be included.

Sure. That's fine. Breakfast and dinner should be at home.

My kid never eats the school lunch. She is a picky eater. Her school has free lunch, if a friend wants a second lunch but doesn’t have the money for the second lunch she will get the meal and give it to them. I do not think any kid should go hungry so I am ok with my tax money going to free lunches

It was literally the same food.

No it wanted. Mushy deli sandwiches made the day earlier, not the same.

Why was it different?

I remember seeing a district newsletter/email post covid (maybe last year or the year before) about kids getting involved in remaking the menus. My kids weren't in school yet during Covid, so it was definitely after that. Is that why the food tastes different now, or were there issues?

Was it really about money as some posters have assumed or were there supply chain or staffing issues related to COVID?

*Or were there other issues

Anonymous wrote:How much money will you saved if Virginia is able to pass free lunches for all kids?

We will mostly have all the votes, and the Governor seems to be on board. Let us know how it will help you?

About $70 a month per kid. I don't know how lunch pickup works but they kept having $1 cookie, chips or yogurt so actual cost might be $80 per month. But I am not sure if those extra snacks are going to be free or not. I kept telling my kids stop getting cookies or chips but it seems the cafeteria doesn't label them as extra cost so my kids keep grabbing them.

I think for a working class family, $140 for two kids has some budget impact.

Honestly, it's so ridiculous for people that don't pay for education to fight about paying for lunch.

We do pay for education via enormous and ever growing property taxes. We do have free lunch for those who can't afford it. FCPS covers some wealthiest areas on Earth - while not everyone can afford private, MANY most definitely can afford lunch..

Do you really believe free lunch is for losers? All poor people are losers? I grew up on free lunch and I now contribute in significant financial and non-financial ways to our community. What is wrong with you people?!

Yep. Also, I don't want to pay for school for anybody making over 75k. They can afford to pay for it.

Problem is people who get paid in cash and don't fully declare it and get free food as low income.

No the problem is people like you who think this.

To deny this happens is ridiculous. I recall my daughter being mocked for her budget Android phone at one of the very high F/R lunch FCPS high schools. She wasn't on F/R lunch but you know some of those kids with iPhones were. The system definitely gets abused.

More milking of the taxpayer. Wonder how big the kickback on this is and who it is going to.
