Why are you devastated over this? There are so many other pressing things going on in the world. People change jobs all of the time.

Devastated because with all the other things going on in the world, knowing my child was in a supportive and safe environment was helpful. Having my kid at a school with a leader unafraid to champion DEI in the current environment was one thing that helped my mental health. I’m sure things will be ok, and I’m sure not everyone is sad he’s going, but personally was hoping we’d have him for a few more years.

Our AP said it’s not an assignment, it’s a mutual decision. So if the panel ranks a candidate #1 but that candidate declines, it’s just the way it is.

Your AP is mistaken. Panels don't rank candidates. They don't vote. They don't even give a recommendation. They give feedback - positive and negative - for each panelist they see. And based on that, the Instructional Superintendent gives their rec to the Chancellor. The Chancellor makes the final decision.

They only said it’s a mutual decision. Are you saying the candidate doesn’t get to decide at all and are just placed by the Chancellor?

The candidate gets to refuse a school. They also get to avoid interviewing in the first place, so it's rare that they would do the interview and then back out, but it happens. We had one panelist who made a late decision to move to her home state for example.
