To be fair, previously all he was doing was going on vacation and occasionally sitting on the couch next to Trump making a fool of himself. This is actually an upgrade to his responsibilities and he knows it. He's hoping that this will somehow translate into him looking like a leader and looking Presidential so that, when the time comes, he will be elected (by whatever means that needs to happen.)
