I teach 6th grade, big South Asian population at my school. Several of my Indian girls last year would joke around and adopt heavy accents and do impressions of Indian moms/aunties. “Beta” gets used liberally, and NO it’s not the alpha/beta male thing. I have noticed they also do it with non-Indian friends who do it back. It’s cute and affectionate and they all seem to have fun with it.

But yeah, I would worry about my non-Indian kid doing it in public because it could seem like the white kid is mocking people with accents. I’d talk to her about time and place.

My daughter is half Indian, so she knows "beta" is a term of endearment that her grandparents use, and she said all the boys have terrible Indian accent and she's not sure what on earth they're going on about. Also, she said it's not just the Indian boys, it's also the white boys.

All this to say, OP, if you're still out there, I get it now!!

But the white boys are NOT using it for the Indian meaning.

The white boys are all infected with the whole man-o-sphere/ toxic online culture. The white boys are following the tate brothers on the internet.

Watch the NetFlix series “Adolescents”. It shows how most boys allowed online are turning into these violent incels/ mma types.

My daughter said the white boys were just copying the Indian boys. This is a middle school with a large Indian population.

Agree. But seems like it should have been Omega instead.

Umm. I know a few Indian boys who followed Tate. Makes sense. It intersects well with their parents' misogynistic attitudes.
- also Indian

Indian culture is misogynistic?

I don't know all Indians and I am not... so maybe just these parents

I didn't scroll thought seven pages to check, but my first thought was Beta like greek and alpha/beta stuff, but my second thought was Bridgerton bc Kate calls her sister beta as a term of endearment, which seems more in line with what the OP was after.

Anonymous wrote:Please explain yourself, OP. Beta is a Greek letter. It's not an "Indian" word.

It’s both. In this case being a beta is the Greek letter. It’s middle school slang. The op must have thought they were using the Indian word (that means little boy).

If you read the thread, you’d realize that the child is using the Indian word, complete with an Indian accent.
