At some colleges it's the same isn't it? It was for me in college, a week long orientation immediately before non-freshman moved in, but nothing over the summer.

Anyway, I think it's silly to think about packing your kid condoms. Either they will figure out how to acquire condoms in college or they won't.

In that case, people are just referring to college parties.

You think sex at orientation is normal?

You guys wouldn’t believe what happened at a frat party during admitted students’ days this year. And you wouldn’t guess in a million years that it would happen at this college.

Would you rather your kid get STD’s or pregnant before college even starts? There is apparently a lot of sex at orientation.

Ivy-types and other privates typically do not have a summer orientation. That is typically a state school thing because most students are in-state and can travel easily twice. Ivies and national/international elites cannot have students come to campus for 1-2 days in the middle of summer then come again 6 weeks later for move-in.
Instead, the 4-7 days between freshman move in and the first day of class is the orientation, often filled with scheduled activities and (alcohol-free) parties put on by the school. Orientation mentors(upperclassmen) lead the freshman through many curated activities in the day, and the schools usually have at least one big freshman party. Many students "pre-game" and drink before those parties or smuggle a small bottle in. That has happened since 1990 and before and frankly there was more debauchery at my ivy O-week than there seems to be now at similar schools and from a friend who has a son at my ivy. Fewer students drink these days, and those that do drink a lot less than students did 30 yrs ago. It is a good thing.

It heavily depends on the school. Moderate Drinking and dancing and kissing a random person you met an hour before are more the norm at some schools, with a large and growing minority not drinking at all.
At others, it is drugs including cocaine, kratom, K, and/or drinking to the point of passing out, with many people having sex sober or under the influence during orientation.

I agree you need to talk to your kids. Sure, send them (to college) with meds and some money, but they should be able to get their own condoms. I don't necessarily see anything wrong with sending some, but that's not for every family.

I started getting my kid Target gift cards for little occasions at 16. For fun! But also because I am aware they may want to purchase things without a record.

My daughter just finished her freshman year. Her roommate had a drunken encounter the first week of school that led to an assault. She did not report it. She ended up spending
most of the fall sleeping 18 hours a day. I found out about it about midway through. The spring wasn't any better but she made it through and is now home. Drunk hook ups are great until they're not.

I scored at my college orientation. Great memories. But I hope my daughter just focuses on making female friends.
