I've never heard a democrat make a move to abolish ICE. I hear calls for due process, which are rejected out of hand by trump toadies. I hear pleas for compassion and decency in the face of human suffering, which get sneers and actual laughs from MAGA. I hear proposals that get shot down with wild edgecase thinking, no research or testing needed.

Why won't the right TRY anything new?? Why is the default position to dehumanize vulnerable people? Case in point, walking to Whole Foods on P St the other day with my kids.
Cops have a man in cuffs.
Their cruiser is in an alley, but really parked directly across the sidewalk.
The man is slumped against the cruiser, obviously dehydrated, not obviously inebriated, or raving, or fighting. Just restrained and passive. I only have field medical training, but it was clear as could be that the man needed IV fluids.
And the four cops were standing around joking with each other, ignoring him, forcing pedestrians to walk into the street, with a man on display and suffering. They were still there, still joshing around, still blocking the sidewalk, when we walked back 20 or so minutes later. But now they had smoothies.

If they had probable cause, why hadn't they taken him in for processing? Why hadn't they put him in the car, at least? Why didn't they move the car back 10 feet to clear the sidewalk? There was nothing behind it in the alley.

I see this kind of thing ALL THE TIME. Casual low-level cruelty and arrogance when so many other avenues are open.

All pedantry aside, this is why I dislike law enforcement.

Hypocrisy.

Cops ignoring pedestrians in crosswalks, speeding, turning on their lights to get through an intersection then immediately turning them off.

I also had a terrible experience when cops thought I was making up a story about witnessing a woman get sexually assaulted on a trail.

I'm sure there are some great cops, but I feel like a lot just love a sense of authority, and nothing more.

I just looked up the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy.

Fairfax is a 6 month academy Monday through Friday. The days are 9.5 hours from 6:30 to 4:00. That’s a 47.5 hour week. That’s a 190 hour month. In 6 months that’s 1140 hours.

But 100 hours.

The 580 hours is a minimum. Most law enforcement organizations have a month or more of organization specific training then months of field training with a supervisor and then a 12-18 month probationary period.

I've seen them railroad a victim into being a suspect, and filing charges against said victim. Splash their name all over local media, make it look like the person was a cold blooded murderer, when all along they had concrete evidence proving otherwise.

As a former DOJ attorney with plenty of friends still there, I have thought about and discussed this a lot - what would I do if forced to litigate/defend positions that I found deplorable? Sure, you can say I should quit, but given that my salary is used to pay rent, etc., and law firms have been flooded by DOJ attorneys looking to leave, it's not that simple.

Not exactly a DMV issue but that apparently ended up with a conviction. That’s how it’s supposed to work. Imagine if I formed an opinion about a racial group based on a few anecdotal examples?
