Obama didn't cause any damage and still remains wildly popular. But I can see how a certain segment of the population can be offended by a tan suit and no indictments.

The cardinals turned to an American because they are known to be the only ones who are able administrators, especially for finances.

The Church's administration is at best Byzantine and the finances of the Vatican are near disastrous.

That Prevost is seen as a moderate and also a Peruvian citizen made it easier for the other cardinals to swallow the otherwise bitter pill of an American.
