Yes, my stylist moved somewhere in Tysons that charges $120, I went once because I love her, but it's too much. Previously she charged $85 and owned her own place, so I didn't even have to tip. Now $120+tip plus tipping the hair washer ends up $150+ and is outrageous

This has always been a question i’ve wondered-do you tip at all if the person owns their own business and is the only person?

I do not tip my sole proprietor because she owns her business - her name is listed as the business owner if you look it up. She rents her own retail space, she owns her own equipment, she buys her own products, she sets her own prices and it is just her from shampoo to blow dry. And she charges a lot for it. So nope, I don't tip. If she wants more money, she can increase the price. I do give her a Christmas present every year though and sometimes I bring her a cup of coffee if I have a morning appointment.

Op here. no I didn’t. because in my mind I honestly didn’t think it could possibly be this much-especially when it wasn’t a fancy salon (where it’s never even cost this much). I mean it doesn’t matter-I obviously paid it and that was that and I will never go to a place that doesn’t publish their prices again. That being said, this person is constantly recommended in local groups-and has been recommended when someone has asked for a great hairstylist at a reasonable price. That’s how I found her in the first place. So I guess I just expected run of the mill pricing. Clearly I was wrong.

They've gotten expensive. I go to Hair Cuttery now, which is about 50$ including tip.

I pay $120 for my cut. It’s low maintenance but falls so much better/easier to fix when I get it cut every 8 weeks. It is a pricey cut but this area is expensive.

Yup. I have fairly short hair. maybe 15 minutes tops. the actual cutting probably took 2 minutes. it was literally a trim.

Price sounds in the range. I'm sure it took more than 2 mins. It's not their fault you have an easy cut. Trims are the same price.

This is the problem though - a lot of hairstylists are starting to charge extra for women with long hair and more complex cuts, but they're not charging less for the 10 minute cut (like mine and OP's). I stopped going when my hairstylist went from $45 to $120 in two years, now I go to Hair Cuttery, where they are very sweet and take their time while trying to convince me to buy their weird CBD shampoo.

After paying $65 plus tip for a no wash no dry basic trim with shoulder length straight hair, and then finding it wasnt even that great if a cut, I started watching YouTube videos.

6 months ago I started cutting my own hair. My husband or son double checks the back and gets any uneven hair. I actually don’t notice the difference. I asked my son who is majoring in engineering and has amazing spatial awareness over spring break and he said one side was very slightly longer but then added it usually has been off somewhere for years and most people have slightly uneven hair. He said my self haircut was in the acceptable range.

For straight hair and a trim ask your spouse, a friend to do it. Not worth the price.

I now pay 80 for a crappy cut by a rude woman who ignores me the entire time and speaks Turkish to her coworkers the entire time. I had a great stylist for a long time who just disappeared during Covid.

$125 from the women who cuts my hair. She charges the top price in her shop. Other stylists charge less in the same shop. No, it isn't worth it.
