I’m the poster above - DC did not apply to Princeton - the mood on campus seemed pretty grim during our campus visit

My DD is signed up for visitas and debating bulldog days vs one of the shorter visits (Monday through Wed is kind of rough for bulldog days - wish some part was on a weekend )
I’m a DC area native but not in the area anymore

My kid is graduating from Yale so our trips to New Haven are coming to an end and we’re all sad about it! It’s a city with urban issues like all cities but a lot of vibrancy as well. We’ve loved our time down there and getting to know the neighborhoods near campus. My dd has had some great non-Yale experiences in NH and will miss it. No need to dump on a community you don’t know.

Of H, P, Y, it sounds like P is the biggest headache and least fun. My kid knows a bunch there that are not enjoying it at all. H seems to be the easiest trip although I do love New Haven. We will see.

Why? New Haven has a lot going for it. Tons of great restaurants, coffee shops, shops, cafes, bars, clubs, all walking distance to campus. Some are institutions that have been there for decades. And the pizza, oh don't get even get me started on the pizza. And you can take the train into NYC for a weekend or even a day trip on Metro North.
New Haven is a lot nicer than it used to be, so I think the issue is that its reputation hasn't caught up. Or maybe some people just don't like urban campuses. If you want a school in the middle of nowhere, you're never going to like Yale.
