RIFs have a lot of regulations that go along with them. They will take time. Slowing the process down is good.

But can't they take out an entire career area of an agency using a RIF, as was done with DEI folk, instead of using agency wide RIFs? I would imagine the former would take less time and be more damaging.

He thinks most jobs are either not needed or can be done by machine or AI. No doubt that is true for some things, but good luck finding machines that can fight fires, provide medical care, interpret and apply laws in a way that will withstand review in court, provide physical security for borders and buildings, conduct scientific trials and studies, etc.

Elon thinks all government jobs involve stamping requests or pressing y/n on claims.

Where is there any evidence that he can do it cheaper with AI, assuming energy resources can support that. Also, this has been said a million times, but Fed salaries are a de minimus part of the budget. Very little savings there.

There is no logic to the purge, so no one can answer this with confidence.

(General rule of thumb : the more you are helping people, especially the disadvantaged, the more the billionaires will think your position is expendable)

This isn’t exactly confidence inspiring though if you know your life is about to be made very miserable in order to get your paycheck.

I’m in a position exempt from VERA/fork/hiring freeze. I don’t think I’ll get RIF’d. But because we lack much office space, it’s looking like we’ll get moved far way that I could have a 3-4 hour daily commute (50 miles within the DC area can be 1.5-2 hours each way.

So I’m “safe” but my life is going to be misery until I can either get another job or someone puts a stop to this madness. Who knows how long that will take. And I’m one of the “lucky” ones.

The point is that knowing you are safe from a RIF is not entirely comforting right now because there are other ways to oust people.

Wow. As someone who’s seen you in action on grand jury duty, I applaud you all. You do great work.

The problem is that the vast majority of Fed employees just do not have the expertise that can do the same job in the private sector. I am willing to bet that many will have difficulties getting jobs in the private sector for the same pay.

I work in IT infrastructure at the DOT, and almost all the technical work is being done by contractors. Almost all the Fed employees from GS-12 to GS-15 are there for oversight. They don't have much technical expertise to get the day-to-day operations done.

I wouldn't be sure at all. Trump has disparaged wounded vets, calling them "losers", and disgraced Arlington Cemetery. He has a hatred towards people with disabilities, and is happy to cancel funding that they require to live their lives in the community, and my guess is he won't treat disabled veterans better.

This is what worries (and sickens) me. I'm a DoD clinician who works almost exclusively with wounded warriors. You know, the guys who had their legs blown off or crushed in combat or combat training.
