The profound ignorance of these people is breathtaking. Also, if you want to focus on solving our own problems, why vote in people who plan to give tax cuts to the richest of the rich and gut social security and Medicare? That’s some real smart thinking right there.

I think part of the issue is that most of the country is not even aware that USAID existed, let alone what exactly it did. I grew up in another part of Virginia and had literally NO CLUE about the US Fed Gov machine until after I graduated college. Even after living here 20 years I still barely understand most of the agencies. And I vote D! Imagine how the out of state R's must feel.

Unless the GOP cuts most defense spending any other cost saving measures will fail. Just look at the budget.

The reputational damage is phenomenal. Thousands of country staffers who had contracts to provide security, translation, logistics and program delivery fired over night. Outstanding invoices for services rendered unpaid. To say nothing for the way Rubio and Trump were silent as they fired thousands of civil servants while Musk called them criminals.

Trump and Musk are following their corporate playgroup of stiffing the people working for them. Too bad he’s dragging down the reputation of the USA with him. They could have followed a normal process through Congress to reduce or defund USAId in an orderly fashion. Instead they made the entire world look at us as a banana republic and untrustworthy partner.

How many USAID folks are direct hires vs. contractors?

How many direct hires vs. contractors are overseas?

Does anybody know ballparks on these numbers?

They will not cut the deficit. The current budget proposal being floated adds more to it, even with all the Medicaid cuts, etc. that have Republicans so giddy.

And that doesn’t even include Trump’s promised tax-free tips and overtime. He is pushing for them to be included. Those alone will add almost a trillion in 10-year costs, according to the materials Republicans have circulated.
