Could my kid take prealgebra in sixth if she tests into it? Are there other extension opportunities? How hard is it to go to HB for middle but then WL IB?

Yes, can take pre-algebra in 6th. There are intensified classes in 6th. Can't answer the transition to WL question but my kid went to private, no homework middle school. very worried about WL transition. They are doing great! The first month was a home work culture shock though. BUt they are very self-motivated.

I have also been told no intensified classes at HB. Is that wrong?

There are no intensified classes in middle school at H-B, but some of the classes are hard. My kid is doing a LOT of writing in sixth grade. Plus, they move quickly because there are 8 classes instead of 7. It's great they get more electives, but the faster pace makes it kind of intensified by default.
oo

my 6th grader's course selectin sheeot had intensified for many classes

For HB? No it does not. There are no intensified classes in HB MS other than for math. But my gifted kid was not bored. The classes do move more quickly and most of the teachers are good.

Just found out that my kid is board in math but the math teacher teaches a higher level math. My child has been taking the higher level math sheets and doing them for fun. I told them to turn them in!

In top 10 on waitlist for ATS and Montessori but it looks like Montessori is only offering 5 seats? Who knows with ATS. Campbell is a lost cause for us (we are very high on list).

Sigh.

Hold out for ATS. That's a low number and it moves over the summer.

We got into ATS with spot #12 over the summer. I'd hold out.

Wow, thank you, and you’re right - we are top 3 now for ATS!

ATS is gonna stick your kid on Dreambox and Lexia during the school day just like all of our other mediocre elementary schools.

no, it isn't. It's only going to do what Syphax tells it has to do. You know your kid can go at their own pace and there's an end each year. Some kids finish after Christmas.

What is Dreambox and Lexia? Apps on a tablet?

Yep. My ATS kid uses reading and math apps on an iPad at school. I thought “traditional” meant more pen and paper. Alas, it doesn’t.

Slightly better cohort of kids though. There are still disruptive kids, but not many who are chronically absent.

That is ridiculous that traditional school uses iPads at all.

No chance. Not for K, and especially not for any other grade.

+1. Maybe a tiny chance before the initial acceptance. Zero chance now

jealous?

Nope. My kid is there now. I didn’t realize they were going to use the iPads as much as the other schools. You know, being “traditional” and all. I really like my kid’s teacher though and get the sense he doesn’t want to use the iPads as much as they do — but with that many kids in a class, he has to have them do SOMETHING while he spends like going through the small groups.

I think the central office makes them d0 Lexia and that Reflex math thing.

Maybe but they’ll have peers who have parents who care about behavioral standards which is the most valuable thing these days

I will agree this is marginally better. Older kid is at another SA elementary and they have more behavioral issues, but ATS still has its fair share (but son is in K, so hoping it will improve).

I just thought the actual instruction would be better. If I could afford it I would move to private in a heartbeat.
