I attended a college consultant presentation a few weeks ago at our high school. That college consultant came out and said he saw a lot of W schools, high stat rejections last year because of yield protection, He said the same profile of kid from a school like Watkins Mill would easily get in.

Please. UMD doesn't do yield protection.

Maybe UMD are utilizing historical yield rates from the W svhools. Maybe it's a MoCo thing.

What are the chances a MCPS kid with those stats would get into W&M or UVA OOS?

Not necessarily. AP exams are to earn college credit. My DD took 11 AP classes but only 2 exams because the schools she applied to only accepted 2 AP classes for credit. Each AP exam is about $75. Some weren't go8ng to pay %700 for no benefit. I asked thus very question at an admission session and was told that getting good scores on APs can help.an application, but not pro idi g s ores won't hurt the application because they know some.diatricts charge for the exam and some.celleges don't accept or accept very few for credit.

UMD doesn’t yield protect, but I have seen weird W school results. Know a kid at Michigan who was rejected at UMD

Accepted in Scholar program. MD private. 4.0 UW. 1500 SAT. Good LORs, ECs, etc.

In Maryland kids with 4.6 to 4.8 from W schools get rejected UMD but if they lived in Virginia they most likely could get into UVA or William Mary or in North Carolina Chapel Hill.

And oddly if kid lived in VA or NC with 4.6 to 4.8 GPA they get into UMD.

Hearing of lots of really strong applicants rejected from our W HS. Lots of APs and perfect or near perfect GPAs. I’d think they should at minimum be spring admits based on my older kids’ experiences. Heartbreaking. DC is a junior and already felt like UMD would be a reach but now I doubt they’ll even bother.

For those with spring admits, go for it. My DD did freshman connection a few years ago. Essentially, you attend UMD in the fall and live and socialize with everyone else. Nobody knows who is freshman connection unless a student shares it. The big difference is freshman connection has classes in the afternoon (which was appealing for DD) and smaller class sizes (another plus).
