So OMB issues a 2 page memo suspending all federal payments except Social Security and Medicare. Someone explain how this works. The federal budget is roughly $6.7 Trillion. Or about 24 percent of GDP. So that's all frozen now - nearly a quarter of the US economy? And under the Constitution, isn't Congress supposed to be in charge of where and how the money is spent?

How is this supposed to work? Is each agency supposed to look under their desks and see if there are any trans or DEI people hiding? Do they send an email to OMB - No trans here. We looked everywhere. And then can they resume their work?

I know we have approximately $1 million in pending reimbursement awaiting federal approval for drawdown - for salaries, construction, etc. Given the current financial position of the college we can front these for less than 2 months before it would cause significant disruption in services and payroll. At least 10 faculty and staff are 100% grant funded from federal grants. Our students are overwhelmingly low-income, from blue collar part of the state. 73% receive financial aid; 39% minority; 80% first gen. All in a county that overwhelmingly voted GOP this election.

If your business model can't substantially sustain the business without this level of support you are describing, then there's a problem with the model.

No business can sustain itself if one of it’s biggest customers just starts stiffing them.

We have a one and five year planning model that accounts for these opportunities- that were already funded. When we receive an award, it has a defined time period, and we plan and budget accordingly. If you interrupt the planned funding stream of course it impacts sustainability!

Guess what - community colleges are lean already. We educate nearly 40% of all degree seekers. We are publicly funded through a state funding formula based on headcount which only accounts for 30% of the institution’s budget. My institution charges just $123 per credit hour, and yet that is unaffordable for a large number of students (hence 2/3rd receiving aid). Federal aid includes Pell, which supports the lowest income students; work-study funding; Perkins - which supports faculty and curriculum development as well as equipment; veteran’s services; apprenticeship training etc. For every dollar invested in a community college, you can expect a threefold return to the community.

But by all means, let’s be penny wise and pound foolish.

For the other executives and managers up early trying to figure out what to do…check in with colleagues and legal counsel at the big universities or organizations that do foreign aid. We are a few days ahead of you in terms of figuring out what it means and what we must do.

This is horrifying and heartbreaking. My staff will lose their jobs, yes. But people will also get more HIV and other STDs, there will be more abortions, and more people will OD on fentanyl because our work is paused.

You can’t just stop clinical trials in the middle without compromising subject safety.

This is going to decimate everything. The stock market is definitely going to be impacted and that’s where my money is right now.

How can the MAGAs take such glee in lives being absolutely decimated by this?

My spouse works in grants management and was already thinking of quitting...this isn't going to help.

Just like all the states that take more money from the feds that they give?

A community college is not a business, dummy.
You and your ilk complain about students taking out loans that they cannot pay, and then you turn around and hate on students finding other avenues to get education and training without breaking the bank.

Vance hates colleges, was just talking about it the other day in an interview about how he thought ICE raids in schools and churches was fine. So, I wouldn’t count on the money if you’re at a university.

Yes, 3-2-1, recession.

Write to your representatives in the statehouse and Congress. Send this to local news outlets, post to your college social media, send this to your chamber of congress. Have your colleagues do the same.

I can’t emphasize enough the need to spread this info locally, far and wide.

Imagine hating minorities so much that you derail the entire Federal government to purge programs that might benefit them. None of this helps Americans of any race.
