This man clearly hasn't been inside of a gas station in decades. It's all visa clerks, visa management, and the stores are all owned by multi-millionaire foreigners churning SBA loans and other set aside and tax schemes. Murray is an 85 year old fossil. Harvard lifer academic and think tank grifter who’s never had a real job in his life. Pretty sure he purposely raised his kids in some Virginia exurb cowtown around Charlottesville or some such. I vaguely recall him bragging about this years ago and the fact that his kids hated it.

Matt Walsh is a fascinating character - he's never meaningfully participated in any societal institution. He was home schooled, never went to college, was a blogger and now a podcaster. And live in a mythical place where $150k homes are abundant, AND have “enough money to set aside for a baby”. Which includes daycare, because both parents are working at the convenience store in this scenario.

Many of these thought leaders are older boomers still mentally stuck in a time when $75k/year was a solid middle class HHI. When we were looking to buy our first house a few years ago (“starter houses” are $350k for 3 br/1 ba/1500 SF in our un-megalopolis of less than 100,000 people), our financial advisor sneered at our unrealistic ambitions and told us HE bought his starter house for $120k. In 1999.
