Ponta Delgado Portugal! Doable on the budget and an amazing vacation. Look at leaving out of other cities.

This flight is brutal.
People are suggesting Japan. So yeah it's not going to be a short flight but it's certainly not going to be any worse than SE Asian and Japan
East coast to Japan is about 2 hours shorter than to Cape Town. I felt every bit of that 2 hours. It absolutely makes a difference.
Newark direct to Cape Town is 14 hours and 20 minutes.
Newark direct to Tokyo is 14 hours and 20 minutes.
I will give you that United lists IAD to Cape Town at 14 hours and 20 minutes and IAD to Tokyo as 14 hours and 15 minutes.

Also $10k for 4 is not a huge budget. Agree with PP that y'all have no idea how much it takes to travel these days!
I mean you can do $1k/pp on a cheaper flight to Japan but I'm not sure aid want that flight esp traveling with only 6 days' time or something.
I would find myself the coolest most interesting pretty fun splurge worthy place - a hidden gem out west maybe CO/AZ/NV/UT and go that. I'd spend the money at a dude ranch even. I would most def not hike it to Asia and I am Asian by the way.
People handle jet lag differently. I have two preteens and we have done two one week long trips to Asia, returned on a Sunday, and kids went back to school on Monday. By Wednesday, they were fine. You have to pay attention to how much and when they sleep on the return flight to make it work.
We just got back from a 2 week trip to Asia, and the kids went to school the next day. I actually find two week trips harder than one week trips because on one week trips, I try to keep everyone a bit jet lagged the whole week so that the adjustment back is not as hard.

I’m asking for people to share their experiences. I’m obviously googling too. You don’t seem to understand the purpose of a forum. Thailand is also overwhelming if you google because there are so many beautiful beach towns.

Of the suggestions so far, Morocco and Colombia are the best. You could definitely do them within your budget and the flights aren’t painful. For a week, I’d try to minimize jet lag, though, so Mexico and Central and South America are your best options. I’d suggest looking at Colombia, Guatemalan and Peru. I’ve been to all and think Peru is the most “on the beaten path” choice, which might be a good option for your kids’ first international trip. Personally, Guatemala is my favorite. United has short direct flights from Dulles and there’s a lot to do with kids.
