That's about when they became popular. I'm really surprised the piercing fad hasn't run its course now, seeing as it's been trendy for about the last 30 years. A lot of people's meemaws now have nose rings, eyebrow rings and multiple ear piercings.

A little stud is fine but I hate the big cow ring ones.

I don’t like them. Not really that attractive on anyone but it’s their nose not mine.

I know a white Jewish woman pushing 50 with a pierced nose (she wears a sparkly stud rather than a ring). She got it in her late 20s (her midlife crisis arrived early). Piercings were popular then, but she was the only one in our peer group to do it. She was still single and living in the city, so it wasn’t a suburban mom thing.

And while I know it’s a cultural thing for Indian women, I still think it looks cool on some women but weird on others. I think you need to have a certain vibe to pull it off as an attractive look. Honestly, it’s mostly a big distraction rather than a value add.
