So parents of young refs, please prepare you kid for the possible abuse he/she may receive and go and watch so nothing gets too out of hand. Be ready to intervene. Good luck everyone! Maybe get certified and you can ref with them.

Also, make sure your kids are ready to center at whatever level they are doing. Several people brought up good points about the expectations of the center referee. They should know the rules, keep the players safe, be confident enough to use the whistle and enforce the rules, and also be able to take some moaning. If you kid isn't ready to center, have them be an AR and you can sit near them and keep an eye on them.

Maryland abuse form:

DC/VA abuse form:
https://vadcsoccerref.wufoo.com/forms/referee-report-form-youth-match/

Email assignor as well.

Forgot to log in before posting that, and then couldn't edit.
Wanted to add that the MD form is a little bare-bones, but they'll get back to you to follow up. Never tried to report anything in VA/DC, so I can't tell you how well that works.
This is great.

Thank you for this. You would think that a link to these forms would be provided during every field certification class and every recertification and, also, you would think that each assignor would send them out before each season. I've never seen or heard of these. Thanks again.

lol what? You think you should report a yelling coach to SafeSport? How about… refs just ignore most of the normal yelling that always happens. (I’ve been a ref and here’s the dirty little secret… it’s super easy to ignore most coaches and parents and most yelling. Most of the refs you see making a big deal out of yelling are actively focusing on the comments so they can make a big deal out of it and flex a little.) And if a coach or parent goes too far, you yellow card the coach. Then if it doesn’t stop it… you red card the coach. It’s not complicated. And if you aren’t willing to do that, then don’t ref.

Would not report to Safesport but I would tell assignor.

The ref should start yelling back at how bad the parents are at their job. Tell them that their kids are talking to themselves on the field say i wish my parents would just shut up already.

It shouldn't have to be your kid refereeing for you to take action when you see some mentally ill adult is aggressively harassing them

Can you expand on this? In this context, what is "abuse"? A parent yelling...Hey Ref you are horrible? You should quit! Know the rules! Get out of the center circle! Get some glasses! Hey ref you're missing a good game out there! Is this abuse that should be reported to the assignor?

All abuse-- there is no reason ever for a parent or coach to shout at a ref. Especially if the the ref is a teenager

We all understand that a parent or coach shouldn't yell at a teenage ref. There is noone will disagree with you. And we will all agree that this is abuse. I asked if they were examples of abuse that should be reported.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I actually incorporate both. I scream at the teen refs that they suck because they don't know the Laws...with a capital "L"!

But here's the thing if you are a young teen trying to do a "job" to make money. You need to actually be doing a job. That means blowing your whistle and being assertive. Standing there barely moving and basically hiding away the entire game benefits no one. This happened several times to our team this year as low level travel. No we didn't berate the refs, but we knew from watching the game before no calls would be made all game. If your 13 year wants to make money they should pick something they are able to do.

Please study the rule before yelling off sides every minute. Most parents are ignorant of the factors and exceptions, especially those yelling and pointing "off sides!"

It's actually a Law, not a rule. And come on, no one yells "offsides!" every minute. Do people really see people "pointing" offsides? What does that look like? I think this is the worst post on the thread...and that's saying something.

A law? Really? Cite?

Are you kidding me? They are called the Laws of the Game. https://www.theifab.com/

You should do standup!
GMAFB. Those are rules, laws are made by governments.

Yep, the governing body (aka...a government) responsible for these Laws is IFAB (International Football Association Board). Wocka Wocka. I'm here all night.
