Picking it up yourself is 20 mins max and $1 of gas or less, which is almost nothing.

I have a close friend who is kind of like this. She has the social skills not to do it in public but her DH is an accountant and he is really cheap (and she’s kind of become that way too) about spending money on stuff that isn’t a basic necessity. He sets “money rules” like, she can buy lunch at work twice a week but has to bring her lunch the other days. In their case I don’t think it’s about control, more like they have financial goals of some sort and he’s the one who “enforces” them. But they’re not poor.

I will admit, I was a bit taken aback the other day when we happened to go to the grocery store together and she saw something that wasn’t on her list (a $15-20 item) that she wanted. She called him to essentially ask for permission before putting it in the cart. She couldn’t reach him and I think only reluctantly put it in her cart anyway because I was watching her. I could see her doing something like what you describe, OP. To each their own I guess.

Scandinavian countries pay over 50% tax rate.

Most people in the country pay that when you look at all the tax - income tax, social security(remember employer pays 1/2), Medicaid, state taxes, county,taxes, car tax, gas tax and sales tax.
