Everyone was talking about it so much, they stopped the training and we went back to our desks. I refreshed CNN over and over again and saw in horror as the towers came down. I tried to get in touch with my sister who was in college in DC, worried that more had been hit than just the Pentagon with talk of visible smoke. Finally got ahold of her and she was hysterical. Got ahold of my boyfriend at the time who was asleep and didn't know what had happened. His sister was also in DC so he desperately tried to get ahold of her then found out a friend was supposed to be at a building near the World Trade Center that morning - waited till that evening to find out he was ok.
Remember everyone afterwards putting small American flags on their cars, the antennas and/or rear windshields. Flags were everywhere.
DP but I frequently visited Long Island back then and had since I was a kid, taking the Throgs Neck Bridge. Always, since I was very young, I would look at the skyline and pick out the Empire State Building and Twin Towers. It was so awful and sad to drive over the bridge after that and not see the towers.
