She included the exact name of someone I knew and some Bethesda references in that book.
Wow, blast from the past. I remember reading that book in...later elementary school? (I grew up in NoVa)
The book was based on the real-life tragic story of her son's best friend who was struck and killed by lightning in Bethany Beach, DE.
And in the book, the main female character in the story (who passes away), is from Arlington, VA.
I love that others on this thread know this and are bringing up Katherine Paterson as a celeb from the DMV. As someone who grew up in western Loudoun, we learned that her experiences teaching at Lovettsville ES also shaped what she wrote in that book and its rural setting:
"On the way to becoming a missionary, I spent a year teaching in a rural school in northern Virginia, where almost all my children were like Jesse Aarons. I’ll never forget that wonderful class. A teacher I once met at a meeting in Virginia told me that when she read Bridge to Terabithia to her class, one of the girls told her that her mother had been in that Lovettsville sixth grade. I am very happy that those children, now grown up with children of their own, know about the book. I hope they can tell by reading it how much they meant to me."
