This is basically Britain's "Auslander Russ" moment. I think they are just tired of not-Brits doing terrible things to them and aren't going to take it anymore. It's purely racism. Most of the violent crime in the UK is committed by native Brits.

The UK doesn't have open borders. They do accept refugees, like many other countries. If you were a refugee, let's say because you were gay from a conservative country where they would kill you for being gay, you would hope that some country would have some compassion for you.

My DH is a Brit. I'm not white. We go to the UK often. His family lives mostly in the southwest, but we have traveled everywhere and was planning to go up north, too next time. One family member does live near that area. I would feel very uncomfortable in those areas now. Awful.
