I get what I think is the gist behind your post, OP. You feel this way about Stanford, I felt this way about Dartmouth. You walk in expecting to fall in love and you don’t and it shocks you.

I still remembering touring Dartmouth which I thought was my Dream School. Turns out I hated the red brick buildings and the campus sort of made me feel quasi-claustrophobic (maybe wrong word choice - but in the middle
of nowhere with a slightly panicked feeling about it).

I still remember feeling so surprised that “this” was the Dartmouth I had built up in my mind.

Google is free. The Stanford Quad was built between 1887 and 1905.

I agree that there are a few nice buildings at Stanford and then a whole lot of nothing special. The few nice buildings are what you see in pictures.
