I majored in Russian, but I think I would have enjoyed linguistics more. I wound up becoming a journalist and a lawyer, so it really didn't matter what I majored in.

Was a journalism major, if I could do it again, might do nutrition/OT/speech therapy. They're all fields my family has had exposure to over the past 10 years, and I think they're amazing.

It's one thing to do that when college was cheap decades ago, but now college costs an insane amount of money, "study what you want" is frankly stupid.

But so is forcing your kid into a major they don't want-- they won't ever get the value out of it because they won't work hard at a career in a field they hate.

It has to be balanced. They can choose their major but need to have a reasonable plan for employment/career.

Exactly, balace is important.

"Study what you want" is not balanced.

Study what you want but have a plan is key. Know that an English major will have to work a bit harder to find a first job---there are not a ton of job descriptions clamoring for "BA in English". Also consider a minor that will help you get on a career path...be it business, data analytics, etc.

But any Humanities/Social science degree with a business minor opens many more doors.
