I would only be jealous of a fed pension if they started 15 years ago. Newer feds pay in a lot more to get the same pension amount so it's lower salary in reality. Sucks.

I would not seek a fed govt job for the current pension offering.....its mice nuts compared to the legacy fed pension that was phased out during the 80s sometime.

Now....pensions are still lucrative at the state/local level across the US, and particularly those working in the public safety positions. Fed Govt - nothing to write home about....its a fraction vs. the legacy fed pension that was overhauled in the 80s sometime.

Trust me on the above...I used to work PT as a tax prepared until a couple of years ago.

Pensions are a scam. They are atrociously expensive for taxpayers, and the only reason people get them is because they happen to work for the only entity on earth (the government) that doesn't care what anything costs. But they're great if you happen to get one. 401ks are not even in the same universe as pensions.

My daughters old public School superintendent of school district retired one school district with a 500k a year pension and went to our school district for bargain price of 400k a year and her husband was a retired principal with a 300k pension.

Her greed is what public sees not the other thousands of low paid hard working
Govt retirees.

My BIL is in a non govt union with equal good benefits. But you need to do 40 years to get full benefits and can’t collect till 65.

Govt should do that

What? No government worker gets a 500k per year pension. And where are superintendents making 400k and principals getting 300k per year pensions? This is some crazy BS.

Nassau county NY does. And when retired they go work on a second school district

California. Lots of cops, fire fighters, UC system, and public hospital doctors get really high pensions.

Which state?

Most of your local county governments and school districts in the DC area still pay out 75% of final 3-years pay (with 25 to 30 years of service credit). You can check on the websites, etc. My understanding is that such defined benefit plans (pensions) are on their way out as well.

Here I googled it for you.

Michelle Reid, division superintendent, rose from $380,000 to $387,600 starting Jan. 1, 2024.

+1

The lower pay in public service is offset by the many of us who have been downsized at various points in our career.

I never received any bonuses at my jobs.

Government jobs offer health insurance in retirement, pensions, and the ability to work into your older years.

So true.

The former superintendent of my public school district is literally on the run from….someone or someone’s in organized crime. He’s one of the shadiest public employee I’ve ever met. My tax dollars at work. I do wonder how many stolen vehicles I’ve de facto paid to ship to Africa through this guy’s pension payouts…

Federal pension is OK, but not great.

Some of the state pensions are insanely lucrative - California, NY, law enforcement/first responders, NYC garbage men, etc.
