One horrible and abusive manager I had used to call us names like "idiot" and "bimbo," and was verbally abusive in other ways, too. Plus, a horrible manager who often contradicted himself and then got angry when people did what he originally told them to. He was caught stealing from the company and marched out of the office by security, in full view of all of us. It was a wonderful moment.

I’ve only seen it happen once, to one of the most smug and self-righteous people I’ve ever met. They always thought themself superior to DH and me. We are cohorts and they made it a point to let us know they thought they were doing “better” than us, whether it be first houses (theirs was bigger, and, brand new!), jobs (clearly they made more!), weddings (a FOUR-day event), even their nanny (they could afford one; no daycare for them!), and would make veiled shots and openly put us down.

They are now divorced, lost their business, had to sell that bigger/newer house, among other things. It doesn’t seem they have anything to brag about anymore! Meanwhile, DH and I are happy as clams still living our modest life. I will admit they each time I heard news of their struggles, I felt that familiar schadenfreude, and I don’t feel the least bit bad about it.

I have neighbors who are some of the most terrible people I've ever met in my life. Narcissistic, pathological liars who commit outright fraud in order to get ahead at all costs. They will destroy relationships, lie, cheat and steal. Their actions are slowly catching up with them, and I do believe that they will reap what they've sown.

AND I have also seen that what goes around, comes around. People put things out there that, in time, come around and bite them in the a$$. I have seen it time and time again.
I'm not talking about kids with cancer. I'm talking things like cheating and then being cheated on, or sand bagging a colleague who ends up being your boss, or needing a favor from someone you've wronged, or otherwise just reaping what you've sown. Stealing a husband only to find out, huh, what do you know, behind closed doors he is an abusive jerk just like his ex wife always said! It happens.

I had somebody scr#w me over in a real estate situation. Within a year the house BURNED TO THE GROUND. Not kidding.

You believe what you want, I'm going with "karma is real" and NOT screwing people over.

I’m always surprised by adults that believe in karma. Not because of bad people getting their comeuppance or not, but because of really good, decent people who get put through the wringer for no discernible reason. We have a family friend whose daughter and husband are sick with extremely serious illnesses. The daughter had a rare condition and will die eventually and her husband may die too. They are both decent people who did everything “right” in life.

I think we all face a lot of challenges. I find the bad characters in my life have felt so entitled they could not handle it, but as bad as they were it's not fun to see someone suffered. if someone raped me or tortured me then absolutely. The emotional abuse and screwing over and cheating out of part of an inheritance is so confusing. I'd rather never deal with terrible people again, but I just can't get much joy out of hearing they suffer. That said, yes, some of the worst people in my life have gone through major shit. In one case her bad behavior finally ruined her job and marriage, but it took many, many years.

Karma? Not sure if I'd easily classify it as that. Most of the time I think if you are just a sh*t person and you constantly get away with it, you get bold and it eventually takes you down.

I'm watching a woman that just lost everything later in life who was just a phony, liar and unempathetic, selfish person have her entire world fall apart on top of herself and lose relationships. She brought all of it on herself. It was all due to her own actions.

So I do agree--you live a life of integrity, treat people well, are honest and considerate and think outside of yourself--life will still happen (people get sick, people die, etc, etc)--but overall you put out good, you get good back.

You cheat, you lie, you don't care about how your actions hurt others: that comes back to you eventually.

This is it.
I’ve gone back and forth on this. But I have seen it happen so many times that bad people eventually go too far and get a comeuppance. It does usually take a long time because they have to burn all their bridges first. One of the most arrogant people I knew has a very hard decline and I feel sorry for her at this point. She went too far and I think it was all self-inflicted in some way. Like a self-undoing for whatever reason.

My DH’s business partner/friend/groomsman screwed him over in their business. Bankruptcy. 10 years later his wife despised the selfish bastard and left him. She’s happily remarried and the kids /young adults are more involved with her new life. It was a sight to see. Karma.
