Michigan and UVA are comparable for law and business. That’s about it.

Michigan has stronger graduate programs overall. But graduate and undergraduate education are two different things.

This is actually true. The DD of a best friend was waitlisted at UVA but got into Michigan. She was in the first week of classes and got word that she was off the waitlist at UVA. To her parents' delight (in-state VA), she packed up and moved to UVA. She had a brilliant career there in music and is now doing very very well and recording.

I’m glad she had a brilliant career, but Michigan is way stronger in Music. It is a top conservatory level program. Just another area where Michigan excels. Once again, it was the $$$ that made the difference and not the quality of the program.

The cost difference is significant. UVA is 37K (all in) for the College of Arts & Sciences (largest college). Michigan is $77-$80. Bank the $40K difference for grad school or downpayment for first home.

To OP - i would suggest UVA and bank the difference to save for what I assume will eventually be law school. DD was a PPL (politics, phil and law), did an Mphil overseas and is now at UVA law. And a summer associate position for the up coming summer in D.C. Because we banked the difference and it compounded we were able to pay for law school (now VERY expensive)

Just study abroad and do SIS for grad school when it counts. Undergrad IR isn’t going to make or break a career

It is an interesting topic as DD applied to both EA. She is deferred at Michigan and in at UVa. We are in state for UVA. We were game to pay for Michigan if she doesn’t get into UVa

If money doesn't matter, SFS (clearly). If money does matter, SFS, W&M, and UVA all would be reasonable choices; Michigan wouldn't.

I agree with this. But, I am not even sure I'd splurge for Georgetown. Not sure the return on investment would there for regular govt/politics/history. SFS is different--that's worth it for International relations.

One more thing - travel and shipping costs to Michigan for four years might break even with cost for Georgetown.

For those majors I would pick UVA for the cost savings (use saved money for grad school, house, even a car!)

If I were going to splurge for those majors I’d choose Georgetown for connections to DC internship opportunities and alumni networks.
