Some real sociopaths on this board. Clearly these are people that are borne without a sense of empathy. Or had terrible parenting. I'm sure these are the same people that never remove the snow from the roof of their car and wait until it turns into a sixty pound sheet of ice that eventually blows into the car behind it.

Calling code enforcement is the right thing to do. Maybe fines will change behavior. And then proceed with some pettiness. Always park cars in front of their house. Let the neighborhood dogs use their front yard. And don't bother picking up because that would be trespassing, right? It's just fertilizer anyway. It'll go away on its own. Why bother.

Calling other people sociopaths because you are too lazy to put on boots and walk in the snow is pathetic. We don’t owe you a shoveled sidewalk. Your entitlement is showing. Buy some boots.

NP here. The civic minded thing to do is to shovel your sidewalk. I had to go shovel my elderly mom’s walk because I would feel terrible leaving it unshoveled. Once the snow goes through a few thaw-melt-freeze cycles walking in boots won’t help. It’ll be an uneven, icy mess.

Maybe there’s no law but it’s what good people do. And if you have a disability or are 80 years old, hire someone!

Hired many shovelers lately? Nobody’s knocked on my door for years with a snow shovel in their hand.

Our neighborhood has teens shoveling. They post on the listserv and many people seem to use them. And this is in Bethesda where everyone assumes the kids are entitled but apparently not so entitled that they won’t do some shoveling on a snow day.

My kids have better things to do than shovel for a bunch of whiny complainers. Walking in snow is not difficult.

It's for pay, not volunteer. And what are your kids doing on their 3rd snow day of the week that is so valuable? Getting to another level in a video games?

They are highly productive without being in school. We don’t need pocket change from people who cannot traverse a few inches of snow.

OK, Ayn Rand. Please go say this to the face of my neighbors whose teenage daughter has spina bifida and walks effortfully with leg braces that don't fit into snow boots and has poor balance on uneven or unstable terrain. Tell them that their daughter should be able to "traverse a few inches of snow" because it's "not difficult" and that she deserves to be trapped in the house all winter, because who wants to see those defective people in public anyway? It's their own fault for being that way and they should just lump it. Tell them what a bunch of whiny complainers they are for having the temerity to worry about their daughter's safety and mobility. "How our amoral selfish family stuck it to the crippled loser next door," that'll be a unique college essay topic!

You realize we get at most 1-2 weeks of snow a year lol.

All the more reason that refusing to shovel makes you a jerk. It's not like it's constant or you have to do it very much, yet you still can't be bothered.

It really doesn’t matter at all. Get a life.

DH and I grew up where there was always snow in the winter, and lots of it. We go out and shovel our sidewalks and our elderly neighbors sidewalks and driveways. DC all go out to help now that they are old enough.

Both our parents still live at home. My brothers will make sure my parents and any elderly neighbors are shoveled out.

You don't know why.

At 30 years old I blew out my back and had debilitating pain from multiple herniated discs. Walking was my only form of therapy and relief because standing placed the least amount of stress on my back other than lying down. No way could I have shoveled snow though.

If he lives in a county where it’s not legally required then who cares? I shovel because my sidewalk gets a lot of pedestrian traffic, but many sidewalks out in the suburbs don’t get much use, especially during below-freezing temps.

Why are you so involved? Why can’t you find some hobbies and shit? Shoveling snow is a shit ton of work. Perhaps he is waiting for it to melt or for the people he hired to come do it for him. Relax, have a drink, and let him do what he wants.

Post 01/21/2024 00:08     Subject: 30 year old neighbor is not shoveling snow

My husband was out of town and my kids had a snow day. We live on a corner so I started shoveling did about 30% of the sidewalk and started on my (long) walkway to the front door and driveway. Neighbor was out with a snowblower and finished the rest of the sidewalk for me. Was really nice and thoughtful.

These neighbors go away a lot and we watch their pets, bring in their mail, take out trash, etc, but this is what neighbors do. You help one another.

The neighbor across the way shovels the sidewalk for an elderly neighbor.

I put down salt because we have some neighbors who like to complain. It is winter, snow melts and turns to ice, be careful!

you will if someone slips and you get sued.

Just argue unsafe and inappropriate footwear and counter-sue to recoup legal costs.
