Same here (but with greater rigor). On College Confidential, there was little merit posted compared to previous years. It was generally used to shape the class: sky high test scores or women in engineering (with very high test scores). Much of the OOS merit was $5K/year, so just a token.

Arts and Sciences at Pitt is running 54K this year, and I expect it to be 57K next year. Definitely not going to meet UMD instate, or even close.

Madison has almost 300,000 people. It’s about the same size as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and St. Louis. It is whiter than average.

Technically, Madison is 270,000 vs Pittsburgh 300,000.

But when you look at the metro areas, Madison is 680,000 vs Pittsburgh’s 2.4 million. Really not comparable at all.

Some of the suggestions here won’t help you because the schools don’t give much merit.

What is GPA? At Pitt, student won’t get much merit to bring close to UMD’s $30k.

Look into these:

U of SC awards in-state tuition if stats are high enough
ASU
U of Arizona
MSU—and Google their merit award chart and special offerings for residents if certain states
WVU—Google their merit award chart
Alabama—Could be free if stats high enough
UVM
Central Michigan U

Does UDel or Purdue give much merit? I thought not.

1. Look at each school’s Common Data Set to see how much merit they tend to award to “non-need” students.

Those stats won’t get him in Penn State or Purdue much less as safeties. UVA is completely off the table.

Penn State should be a safety with DS stats. Purdue also a safety for non-CS or engineering. VT out of state has a high acceptance rate, esp. for non-engineering.

Don't rely on Penn State being a safety school.

SUNY OOS tuition is $28k and I know students that got $10K in annual merit. They’re an excellent affordable option, even for OOS. Many SUNY schools are seeking to attract non-NY students.

+1. Binghamton is very competitive but is seeking to increase their number of OOS students. Buffalo is another good choice with a lot going on in the area for college students.

Any insight on SUNY Cortland? They have what seems to be a sports focus (football games are a big student draw, etc). Might have the state flagship vibe?

I live in NY and know a few kids that have gone to Cortland. It is known for education majors, a lot of PE majors, exercise science. I’m sure a lot of other majors. Of the 3 graduates I know , 2 are teachers and one in business. It does have a few great football games during the season I’ve heard. The SUNYs are interesting because there are several campuses and many of them are known for their “personalities”; artsy, sporty, musical, engineering, business, science, agriculture etc. The governor announced last year that Buffalo and Stony Brook are the two flagships. But I don’t know if they’re the type of flagship campuses that are in other parts of the country.

Op good luck to your kid. So many good options out there .

What is your budget max? I think MSU is about 55K OOS with room and board and if they can get 15K merit that would bring it to 40K (ish). UMass-Amherst is also about 55K OOS with room and board - I am not sure what is the potential merit award. University of Delaware is also about 55K OOS with room and board and I think 10-15K in merit OOS wasn’t uncommon in past years.
