And Nikki Haley has said she’d pardon him. That is unrelated to his rambling dementia, but I think it’s important to note that none of the GOP front runners has a lick of love for their country. It’s party party party.

I think Nikki will say whatever she needs to, to lure in his supporters. I don't think she'll actually pardon him. it would make her look like a pathetic boot licker and as the potentially first women president, she needs to appear stronger.

I expect the NH turnout today will be quite a bit below the 2016 Republican primary turnout.

Not sure that it will be comparable to 2016. NH makes it very easy to vote in the R primary even if you aren't an R. I can see lots of Ds/undeclareds voting in the R primary this year because it's the only one that is somewhat competitive. In 2016, both parties had competitive primaries so there were probably not many crossover voters.

Possibly exacerbated because the NH Democratic primary is nonbinding and Biden isn't on the ballot. The DNC set South Carolina as the first primary.

He never really debated in 2020 or 2016; he more or less made the same garbage points he was making elsewhere. I assume he’ll be shamed into debating Biden once and then in front of a national audience his issues will be visible to those who watch. The Republican among them won’t care.

Has anyone ever heard Trump make any cogent statements or substantive policy points?

He was cogent back in the 80s, though I don’t remember any points he made (as I child I wasn’t exactly following him). It’s fun to watch people author in what they think he means. They did it in 2016 and they do it now. He does not make sense unless you already have some idea what he’s talking about and even that, soon, will be less possible all the time.

You're absolutely right and it's one of the secrets to his popularity in certain quarters. He says something that is completely incomprehensible, but sounds vaguely racist or otherwise dumb and liberals interpret as racist or dumb. Then republicans react by interpreting it as not racist/telling it how it is/some brilliant idea or insight. But really it's neither- it's just something that popped into his dementia addled mind at that particular moment.

Trump is pure id (the instinctive, unrestrained part of the personality). He often says out loud what most of us have learned to put in nicer terms or keep to ourselves. That aspect of him has always been there--it's just that he could cover it up a bit better when he was younger and his brain wasn't as affected by age, lack of sleep, the pressure of multiple trials, and fear. His vocabulary has shrunk significantly (just watch a video of him from the 80s) and his thoughts are markedly more disorganized, but he is still sharp enough to deliver enough insults, trigger words, racist tropes, and shocking statements that resonate with his followers. It's not like most of them are actual spending any time listening to his speeches from beginning to end. They just read the chyrons on TV, headlines in RW rags, or listen to RW media talking heads speaking for him. Apparently that's enough for them.

And I believe the bolded is exactly why so many folks love him.

All of this is absolutely true and it’s the reason I don’t think he’s gaining any new voters.

Back in the 80s, he wanted to kill some innocent black kids for what he falsely claimed they did in Central Park.

I didn’t say he was a good person in the 80s. I said he was cogent. Lots of racists are cogent. Lots of rapists are cogent.

I was responding to the part about not remembering any points he made -- the point I remember him making was that those black kids should be executed for stuff they didn't do in Central Park.

shamed???? shamed??? that's why they love him. It is not possible to shame him.

It's possible. After being ridiculed for a gaffe (ever increasing), Trump will come out the next day to defend himself with what he really meant. Case in point...currently he and Haley are battling over who would do better on a dementia test.

Mark Twain was right about not fighting with stupid people. He’s dragged her right down into the mud with him because he has so much practice.
